February 27, 2003 a note from Samuel's son Nicholas Brockunier. When my dad died he probably saw it coming and would have preferred to be in California - in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where he was transplanted at age 6. He always said he was reborn in those mountains at the age of 6 and belonged there. Mom never really had the same feelings about that, though I do. Maybe that kind of place is where I belong when I die, except in western Maryland.
I think if you add anything to his bio you might want to say he always loved the California Sierra Nevada Mountains and the West, even though he lived most of his life in the East. He never forgot how wonderful the West was (Nevada City and Grass Valley], where he grew up until his father's mines closed and the family moved first to somewhere near Sacramento, and then to San Francisco (somewhere across the street from Golden Gate Park, where he said there was some fair he used to go to after school]. Right - it was the World Exposition of 1915 - that's what I learned later. People are funny in how they remember and describe things, aren't they?
